About PGL - Players' Guild of Leonia - 91 Years Young and We're Just Getting Started

The Players' Guild of Leonia (PGL), one of the oldest continuing community theatres in New Jersey, was founded in 1919 by a group of leading artists and theatre lovers. Our mission is to provide high quality, low cost theatre in our town and the surrounding communities of southeast Bergen County (northern New Jersey), including Englewood, Fort Lee, Leonia, Palisades Park and Teaneck. Follow directions by car and bus.

The Players' Guild currently presents four public productions each season, as well as monthly workshops, in the Civil War Drill Hall, a 110-seat, wheelchair-accessible theatre in which the audience is close to the action and feels involved in the performance (more below).

"Let Us Entertain You!"

  • "The Players' Guild has been astonishingly successful in entertaining... and keeping alive our cultural heritage."
~ Alan Alda, Actor/Writer/Director, former Leonia resident, PGL supporter

  • "The House commends the Players' Guild for its significant contribution of outstanding quality to the cultural environment of Northern New Jersey."
         ~ New Jersey State Senate

  • "THREE CHEERS! to the Players' Guild for promoting new works."
~ Catherine Rowe Pherson, Producer, New Playwrights Series, Villagers Theatre in Franklin Township

  • "Great Show... Thanks to all of the performers, the director, choreographer and crew. Fabulous job! ... What a beautiful renovation job on the Drill Hall. That alone was worth the price of admission."
~ R. Gates, Fort Lee, NJ

  • 90+ Years of Community Theatre

We actually started well before 1919. Like many groups, we met in homes, storefronts, schools... wherever! At last, an ongoing home was found in the basement of All Saints Episcopal Church. Public performances of the Players' Guild of Leonia were presented in its auditorium for 37 years. When the church needed to expand its daycare program, we were "on the road" again, meeting in homes and school auditoriums with an old printing shop for headquarters.

In 1993, the Players' Guild entered into a lease with the Borough of Leonia to restore and renovate the historic Civil War Drill Hall (circa 1859). Two years later, we opened this national historic landmark, the country's only existing frame Civil War Drill Hall, as the permanent home of our community theatre group.

In 2001, the Borough of Leonia provided a matching grant, with assistance from the Bergen County Community Development, Open Space and Historic Preservation Trust Fund that increased seating, added restrooms and storage, dressing rooms, rehearsal space, a costume room and scenery workshop. In 2002, a wraparound deck was added.

During the past year (2009-2010), The Players' Guild of Leonia celebrated its 90th season. We invite you to join us for the performances and special events of our 91st season (2010-2011).

Walk of Stars - Add A Brick

Our wonderful Walk of Stars is not exactly Hollywood Boulevard, but the patio outside the Civil War Drill Hall Theatre, lined with decorative bricks, features the names of PGL members, supporters and loved ones. And, we have room for more!

Inscribed bricks make wonderful gifts! Contact us for more information.
